European Day of Languages: Britannic Gives Back with a Morning of Culture, Learning, and Fun
At Britannic, we deeply value the importance of giving back to our community and embracing the beauty of diverse cultures. Recently, we had a heartwarming opportunity to do just that during European Day of Languages, a special event where schools across Europe come together to celebrate different languages and traditions. This year, we were honoured to be part of the festivities, and thanks to the passion and enthusiasm of our Head of Customer Experience and Success, Jason Dendle, we helped create a memorable and enriching experience for a local school.
On the 26th of September, Jason spent the morning at his children’s school, bringing a taste of Germany straight to the classroom. Dressed in traditional Bavarian attire, he stepped into the role of storyteller and cultural ambassador, eager to share the beauty and magic of the German language.
The day began in the reception class, where Jason captivated the young students by reading Urmel aus dem Eis, a beloved German children’s book. With animated expressions and engaging gestures, he brought the story to life, sparking laughter and curiosity. After the reading, Jason stayed to chat with the children, answering their eager questions about Germany, the language, and of course, his eye-catching Bavarian outfit. It was a lively, interactive session that not only entertained but also opened a window into another culture, igniting the children’s interest in the world beyond their own.
Next, Jason visited his daughter’s class, where he adapted his storytelling to suit older students. He engaged them with more in-depth insights into German culture, sharing stories about everyday life, traditions, and unique words they could try to pronounce. The children were fascinated, and for many, it was an eye-opening experience that showed how language can connect us to different ways of life. Jason’s visit helped them see that learning a language is about more than just words—it’s about understanding the world and embracing its diversity.
But Jason wasn’t alone in making European Day of Languages special. The school organised a variety of activities that turned the day into a true cultural celebration. The children explored different tastes at a food-tasting session, sampling traditional dishes from across Europe. An engaging assembly introduced them to the many languages spoken across the continent, while other guests shared their native tongues, including Finnish. The kids were also taken on a virtual tour that whisked them to places like Greece, Italy, and Norway, and the fun continued with a dress-up event, where they wore the colours of European flags, followed by a delicious Italian-themed lunch.
At Britannic, seeing Jason dedicate his time and energy to bringing a bit of European culture into the classroom was incredibly rewarding. It’s moments like these that remind us why sharing our passions with others is so important, especially when it can inspire the next generation. We’re incredibly proud of Jason and all the volunteers who brought Europe to life for the children that day. Their efforts created a joyful, engaging learning experience that broadened the children’s horizons, helping them see the world in a new and exciting way.
